Irwin Sure Arrival Matic Can Raise Potential Pogba Maximum
Former Manchester United defender Denis Irwin believes the arrival of Nemanja Matic from Chelsea could bring up Paul Pogba’s full potential.
Matic ensured his arrival to Manchester United last week. Irwin believes this will make Paul Pogba get a more attacking role in Jose Mourinho’s team this season.
“He’s a transfer designed to let Pogba play a bit more attacking,” said Irwin.
Mourinho will likely play Matic as part of a midfield trio in midfield alongside Ander Herrera and Pogba. And the last name will be a more helpful figure of the side of his team’s attack.
“I’m a bit surprised by the fact that Chelsea sell Matic to their rivals that will be challenging in the Premier League next year,” he added.
“Matic has been an outstanding player, a great defender. And they need players with a type like that, “continued Irwin.
Irwin, who garnered more than 350 appearances for United, told talkSPORT that he believes Mourinho has put together a squad that could challenge the title last season.
“There is good competition in the squad now, there is a good mix of midfielders and attackers and I think the club will be able to challenge this year. Since Jose came to the club, the seven players they brought in were mostly high players. Players who rely on the physical, players you need to compete in the Premier League. There is a mixture of young and experienced players who are good too, “he said.
Mourinho has brought Pogba, Matic, Romelu Lukaku, Victor Lindelof, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitryan and Eric Bailly in his year at Old Trafford.
“Lukaku is an attacker who can score 25 goals per season, I hope Marcus (Rashford) to be a better player this year. And I see Mkhitaryan also improved, so I hope to see more goals, “said the Manchester United legend.
Irwin also believes Luke Shaw has the potential to maintain a place in the first team for years to come. But on the one hand, the 22-year-old looked to have a bad relationship with Mourinho. (Source: Independent)
